Facts about relief, healing, and dealing with all aspects of panic/ anxiety disorders please?

<< can shark cartilage pills treat social anxiety?  How to get rid of anxiety? >>

I am looking for any/all input about dealing with panic and anxiety disorders and other disorders they lead to such as agoriphobia and depression.

I need this information not only for myself, but I want to help others as well.

I began having sporadic panic attacks about 10 years ago. After about 3 years of wondering what was going on (since I was getting worse) I started to do research and assumed a self diagnosis, which was later confirmed by various doctors. My worse period (daily 24/7, was between the time I was diagnosed up to about 3 years ago. I have been doing meditaion practice for about 8 years and Tai Chi and Yoga for about 3 years. I have had some major progress, but the sensations still come and go. I don’t really get depressed, but I certainly don’t live my life as fully as most people. I am an agoraphobic and I have been taking alprazolam for situation relief or when I feel like I’m going to lose it during a relapse. Want to write more, but out of space. Thanks

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is the best in dealing with such problems…Since it’s all about negative thoughts that provoke these kind of reactions (anxiety, palpitations, avoidance). I work in a mental health field for nearly 6 years now, and for the last year or so I started to develop anxiety and panic attacks…It’s crazy to get them knowing that they happened because of false beliefs…I tried to work it on my own but couldn’t…it was overwhelming…Currently I’m doing it with a therapist, who gives me ‘home works’ and says "well of course you know all about this!". Well I do, but it didn’t work till I started seeing a therapist.

Mediation would help, as it is a part of the CBT (i.e. relaxation therapy)…but the core problem is the negative thoughts.

I don’t like giving long answers…but try the Socratic questions once you have a negative thought (How do I know this is true?
Is there any evidence in favor of what I believe to be true?
Is there any evidence to the contrary?
What other information do I need to make a more reasonable conclusion?
Can I see any problems with my reasoning here?)…

    It helps. Good Luck.

    I always do this…
I say "Hakuna Matata" to myself… it means "no worries" or something similar in Swahili. It works. It does two things for me… it lightens the mood with a touch of humor with its lack of seriousness (as its also a reminder of a Disney movie Lion King, which was about life and challenges). But it also is factual and a valid philosophy to live by. When you realize that you shouldn’t worry about things you cant change… and whether you worry or not, the problem will still be there… so why not keep a cool head?

Massage therapy can be very helpful. The sense of touch is very powerful and vital to maintaining a sense of balance in your life.
Massage therapy helps release endorphins into your bloodstream. Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killer and mood elevator. Massage therapy can restore a sense of calm and peace. You can have a therapist come to your home. I had a friend that suffered with panic attacks and massage did wonders for them.

Many people with panic disorders suffer from reactive hypoglycemia episodes. Get your blood sugar checked.

Two things. First, try St. John’s wort or 5-HTP.

Also, get yourself the book "The Law of Attraction" by Michael J. Losier. It’s a workbook. If you look on Amazon.com, you’ll see that several reviewers say it’s the best book of its type.

I am currently taking Effexor XR for depression and anxiety. The big mistake I make is stop taking my medication.. If your taking medication, stay in touch with doctor and/or councilor. The more honest you are with them the better they can help you. Stay off alcohol and street drugs if your currently using them. Alcohol is a depressant and will contradict with any anti-depressants you may be on. This really bites at parties and cookouts but believe me, it works.
As far as non-medical that will help, minimize stress and prioritize your days events. I use to take ativan for anxiety until I learned how to take some stress out of my life. Not being able to hold an uncovered coffee or other beverage without spilling it because the tremors in my hands were so bad it was embarrassing.

    Good luck!
