I’ve Think I;ve Found What Caused My General Anxiety Disorder?

<< what causes panic attacks  Anxiety DIsorder can cause HEART PALPITATIONS?! is that true? dangerous? >>

My GAD started when I was 11, At the same time the doctor put my on a beta blocker called Sotalol for a condition with my heart, I just happened to google Sotalol tonight and it says side effects can be Anxiety and Depression. Could this be the cause?? Could this be the end to my 10 years of anxiety??

    Hi.

I am an RN and have GAD.

Sotalol ad other betablockers are often prescribed to dampen down the effects of anxiety on the nervous system (eg. racing heart, palpitations) all caused by the release of adrenalin (the fear hormone). It would be unusual for a doctor to have to prescribe Sotalol for any other reason than this for an 11 yr old so I would presume that is why you began taking it. It does not actually work on stopping the anxiety but rather lessening the side effects of the anxiety.

It would be very unlikely that Sotalol would be the cause of the GAD.

The focus for living with GAD is about ways to manage it including antidepressants and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Unless there is an outstanding trauma or obvious cause the treatment of GAD focusses on strategies to cope with it rather than trying to find a cause of it.

I know how awful it is to worry. People often don't understand just how bad the worry can be and how it can affect your life.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has worked VERY well for me and my GAD is very very mild now and only worsens when I am under a load of stress.

I would certainly not stop taking this without medical review. There may be some other medications that will work more effectively. Ask your doctor about a therapist who deals with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which has been proven to be the most effective in helping treat GAD.

    Hope this helps. Goodluck

I hate to say this but please go get 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th opinions. I've seen too many cases where these doctors prescribe meds and it only hurts the people we love in the end….due to overdose, or suicide. I don't want to scare you, but dont want to lose you either. Stay strong, and make a plan. When you get nervous, think, what should I do at the moment, CAN I do anything at this moment. Mind and power come in hand and only YOU control yourself and emotions, and how to handle situations.
