first time going to doctor for anxiety..will he give me meds on 1st visit?
Since ive noticed (the past 3 months or so), i have all the symptoms of G.A.D (general anxiety disorder). I was curious with others knowledge/exp. This Tues, im going to see this family dr, (new dr) whom ive never seen yet, due to my insurance changing. My question is, since i have yet to see him, even with me explaining my anxiety symptoms/problems, will he give me a prescription for anxiety on my first visit? Or will i have to come back or go to another doctor? I tried Xanax once before when i had a panic attack, and it really calmed me down. Will he give me Xanax or Valium if i ask? I know there are alot of drs who are reluctant to give out meds like these, cause unfortunately the people who abuse it decrease the chance of others who do need it. I dont want to be put on anti-depressants. Just something for my anxiety to take whenever i feel like im going to have a panic attack. So again, j/w if this tues he will give me anything being my 1st visit & can i ask for the meds i want?

It really depends on your doctor. I was in a very similar situation as you. My insurance changed and I went to a new dr for the very first time. On my first visit he prescribed me Lexapro to take daily and then prescribed me small dosages of Xanax to take only as I need it. It really varies on your symptoms and if you feel anxious every single day, like me. Thats why I'm on the Lexapro to help control it and the xanax just gives me a calming effect if I'm really freaking out. They normally won't prescribe Xanax as your only anxiety option b/c its highly addictive. Thats why I only use it occasionally , only when I absolutly need it. Your dr will probably either prescribe you some meds or refer you to a psychiatrist. Let your dr know that you have taken Xanax before and that is has worked for you. Its better to get something that you have tried and know that works. But, your dr will always know best and new meds are coming out all the time. He'll talk with you about all of your options. Good luck!
add on: also, if your dr gives you samples of Lexapro or another SSRI, hang in there and don't stop taking them. the first week i had horrible side effects of lethargy, being tired and feeling very sick to my stomach for about a week. now, i'm fine and have absolutely zero side effects. most of these drugs take awhile for your body to get used to them, but after a week or two you should feel fine. if you have any questions about it, email me.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:40 pmDepends on your doctor.. I went on anxiety meds with 2 different dr.s and they both gave me samples the first time. They also discussed getting therapy, and some breathing and meditation exercises to try.

I was in your shoes last Friday. My doctor gave me prescriptions for Zoloft for the Generalized Anxiety Disorder and depression and Klonopin to prevent panic attacks. Just make sure you explain yourself well to the doctor. They can tell who is there for the right reasons. Good luck.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:40 pmProbably. My husband lives on Xanax. I'm sure they won't send you home with nothing. Not for nothing but you should try drinking Chamomile Tea. It's very calming and soothing. Perfect for panic attacks. Good luck at the docs.
